Today, Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGIis sold in 120 countries around the world.

With an annual production of about 90 million litres, over 90% of which is exported, it is one of the main Italian agri-food products in the world.

Its success, particularly on an international level, has contributed to the emergence and diffusion of fraud represented by products that imitate or simply claim the title “balsamic”, harming the producers and proliferating consumer confusion.

In reality, the only three recognized designations of “balsamic vinegar”are Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO, Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia PDO and Balamic Vinegar of Modena PGI.

Products with different characteristics that have always been produced in the territories of which they proudly claim origin.
EU Regulations provide for the establishment of public systems of control and surveillance at a national level.

In Italy, the Authority responsible for official controls is the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies Politiche Agricole.
